How it works
Weight conversions route through the kilogram. The pound is defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg, so pounds to kilograms is a multiplication by that constant and kilograms to pounds is a division by it — or, more conveniently, a multiplication by 2.20462.
The stone is only used informally, mostly for body weight in the UK and Ireland, and is exactly 14 pounds (6.35029318 kg). If you see a weight written as "11 st 6 lb", convert the stones and the pounds separately and add them: 11 st = 69.85 kg, 6 lb = 2.72 kg, so 72.57 kg in total.
Ounces are worth a second look because there are two of them. The avoirdupois ounce used for everyday goods is 28.3495 g, but the troy ounce used for gold and silver is 31.1035 g. This tool uses the avoirdupois ounce. If you are pricing precious metals, using the wrong one understates the weight by about 9%.
Strictly speaking, kilograms measure mass and pounds measure force, but in everyday usage — and on every scale and shipping form — pound is treated as a unit of mass equal to 0.45359237 kg. That convention is what this converter follows.

Frequently asked questions
How many pounds is 1 kg?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds. To convert, multiply kilograms by 2.20462: 70 kg × 2.20462 = 154.32 lb. Going the other way, multiply pounds by 0.45359237.
How do I convert kg to stone and pounds?
Divide kilograms by 6.35029318 to get stones. The whole number is stones; multiply the decimal remainder by 14 to get leftover pounds. 70 kg is 11.02 stone, which is 11 stone and about 0.3 lb.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume (29.57 mL) and an ounce measures weight (28.35 g). They are only interchangeable for water, where 1 fl oz weighs very close to 1 oz. For flour, oil or honey they differ substantially.
What is a troy ounce?
A troy ounce is 31.1035 g and is used for precious metals, versus 28.3495 g for the standard ounce. Gold prices are quoted in troy ounces, so converting a gold weight with the standard ounce understates it by roughly 9%.
Why do US recipes use ounces and cups instead of grams?
The US customary system predates metric adoption and never switched. Weight in ounces and volume in cups remain standard in American recipes, which is why cooks elsewhere have to convert constantly — and why weighing in grams is more reliable than measuring by cup.
