Height Converter

Height is the one conversion where decimals are useless: nobody says they are 5.9 feet tall, they say 5 foot 10. Enter centimeters and this tool splits the result into whole feet and leftover inches, or go the other way from feet and inches to cm.

How it works

The conversion itself is exact: an inch is defined as 2.54 cm, so centimeters to inches is a division by 2.54. The part that trips people up is presentation — 70.87 inches is technically correct but nobody reads it that way.

To express a height as feet and inches, divide total inches by 12. The whole number is feet; the remainder is inches. So 175 cm ÷ 2.54 = 68.90 inches, which is 5 feet (60 inches) with 8.90 inches left over — written 5′ 9″, usually rounded to 5′ 9″.

Going the other way, multiply feet by 12, add the inches, then multiply by 2.54. A height of 6′ 2″ is 74 inches, which is 187.96 cm.

Rounding is a real issue with height. Medical forms usually want one decimal place in cm, while everyday use rounds to the nearest inch. Rounding 5′ 8.9″ down to 5′ 8″ loses nearly an inch — about 2.5 cm — which is why the tool shows the decimal and lets you decide.

Frequently asked questions

How tall is 175 cm in feet and inches?

175 cm is 5 feet 8.9 inches. Divide 175 by 2.54 to get 68.9 total inches, then take 60 inches as 5 feet, leaving 8.9 inches. It is usually written 5′ 9″ when rounded.

How do I convert feet and inches to cm?

Multiply feet by 12, add the inches, then multiply by 2.54. So 6′ 2″ is 74 inches × 2.54 = 187.96 cm.

What is 5 foot 10 in centimeters?

5′ 10″ is 70 inches, and 70 × 2.54 = 177.8 cm.

Why does my height in inches have a decimal?

Because the underlying conversion is continuous. An inch is exactly 2.54 cm, so most metric heights do not land on a whole inch. Rounding to the nearest inch is normal in conversation but loses up to 1.27 cm, so keep the decimal for medical or sports records.

Is 180 cm considered tall?

It depends on the population, but 180 cm (about 5′ 11″) is above average adult male height in most countries and well above average female height. Height percentiles vary significantly by country and generation, so a single threshold is not meaningful globally.
