Tip Calculator
Work out a tip at any percentage, split it across the table, and round up or down. Default presets 15%, 18%, 20%, 25% for quick comparison.
Tip is calculated on the pre-tax amount. Split evenly across all people; if someone ordered much more, divide the food items by hand instead of trusting the even split.
Standard US restaurant tipping is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. 18% is a safe default. Lower than 15% reads as a complaint; 25% is for genuinely excellent service. Outside the US, tipping norms differ wildly (often already included, or not expected) โ adjust accordingly.
How this calculator works
Enter your bill, the tip percentage you want to leave, and how many people are splitting. The result shows the total with tip and how much each person owes. The "effective %" is the tip as a percentage of the pre-tax bill โ useful when the bill includes tax that shouldn't be tipped on.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
A standard restaurant tip in the US is 15-20% of the pre-tax bill. 18% is a safe default for decent service. Anywhere below 15% reads as a complaint, above 22% is generous. For exceptional service (server remade your dish without complaint) 25% is fine.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tip on the pre-tax amount. The sales tax is not service the restaurant provided, so adding 20% of the post-tax total effectively tips on the tax too. Most US tipping guides and etiquette columns recommend pre-tax.
How do I split a bill with different tip percentages?
Compute the bill plus tip for the whole table, then divide by the number of people. If one person ordered an expensive dish and another a salad, splitting evenly is unfair. A reasonable middle ground: split the food and drink proportionally to what each ordered, but split the tip evenly.
