How it works
Fuel volume conversions route through the liter. The main pitfall is gallons: there are two sizes. The US liquid gallon is 3.7854 L; the UK (imperial) gallon is 4.5461 L — about 20% larger. Canadian gas stations switched to liters decades ago but you'll still see prices labeled "per liter" or occasionally "per 100 km".
Quarts and pints follow the same pattern: a US quart = 0.9464 L, a UK quart = 1.1365 L. A barrel of oil (42 US gallons = 158.987 L) is the global standard for crude pricing.

How fuel volume units differ
US and UK both use gallons/quarts/pints/fluid ounces — but they are all different sizes. An imperial gallon is 20% larger than a US gallon. Metric is consistent (1 L = 1000 mL). Mixing imperial systems creates errors of up to 25%.
